Texture is one of those choices most homeowners never actively make — they inherit whatever the builder sprayed. But it changes how a room reads, how forgiving the walls are, and how much light bounces around, so it is worth choosing deliberately.
Knockdown — the practical default
Sprayed on, allowed to set briefly, then flattened with a wide knife to leave soft mottled plateaus. It is the most common texture in newer Colorado homes for good reason.
Knockdown hides minor drywall imperfections well, takes paint evenly, and future patches blend into it with far less effort than a smooth wall requires. If you are undecided, this is the safe answer.
Orange peel — subtle and easy to clean
A fine sprayed stipple with no knockdown pass. Much subtler than knockdown, closer to smooth from a few feet away.
It suits smaller rooms and hallways where heavy texture would feel busy, and the shallower profile makes it easier to wipe down — a real advantage in kitchens and kids' bathrooms.
Skip trowel and hand-troweled finishes
Applied by hand with a curved trowel, producing broad irregular plateaus with a distinctly Southwestern character. It fits adobe-influenced and Santa Fe style homes naturally.
It is labor-intensive and therefore more expensive, and matching it for a future repair takes real skill — worth knowing before you commit a whole house to it.
Smooth — modern, and unforgiving
No texture at all: level-5 drywall finish, primed and painted. It is the cleanest, most contemporary look and the standard in high-end modern interiors.
It also shows everything. Level-5 requires a full skim coat over the entire surface, so it costs meaningfully more, and any future repair has to be feathered perfectly because there is no texture to hide behind. Worth it in the right room, expensive in the wrong one.
